Leonidas

Betsy drove us back to the institute, the second time today. Night had fallen, and this morning felt like a million years ago and the pleasure we found in her bed seemed like even longer. We rode in silence. Cold settled in the air around us, either from the chilly autumn night or because of what cooled between us.

She had to be terrified of me. I almost killed her, for gods’ sake. I’d completely given over to the demon side of myself. Only when Betsy snapped at me in that sassy way she had when we first met in the hospital did I recognize her. Then her touch, her gentle kiss, the familiar scent of cinnamon and comfort I’d come to associate with her penetrated my consciousness, calming both me and the beast inside.

But it didn’t change the fact I’d come too close to mauling her. Maybe Violetta was right. Perhaps I was too dangerous.

My master was the closest thing to a mother I’d ever had. The Luxis might not be a home, but the order was where I belonged, and that had always been a comfort. Being cast out felt as though someone had cleaved through my ribs with an axe.

As she neared the institute, activity caught my attention.

“Pull over,” I directed Betsy. “Behind those bushes and turn off the lights.”

She did as I asked.

“What’s going on up there?” she whispered, though no one would hear us several hundred feet away from the commotion.

Eight black SUVs and about twenty people in suits milled about. Their headlights illuminated the front of the institute.

“I don’t know,” I whispered back. We leaned in close so we could see through the gap in the brush, our heads inches apart.

I did my best to focus on the activity on the lawn and not the delicious smell of honey and cinnamon from the woman next to me. The urge to find solace and home in her lips pulled at me, but I pushed it away.

First one, then two, then four suited people exited the building carrying boxes and computer parts. They loaded up the SUVs before going back inside to retrieve more.

“Crap, they’re taking all the records I was hoping we could use,” Betsy whispered again. She paused, then said, “I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but considering I just found out we used you as an experiment, this looks like a cover-up to me.”

Betsy grabbed my hand even as I reached for the door handle. “What are you doing?” she asked, her voice sharp with fear.

“I’m going to get those records.”

“If you haven’t noticed, there are twenty of them, maybe more inside.”

My arm retracted so I could lean in closer to her. “Do you really think that’s going to stop me?”

She squared her shoulders off toward me and said in a firm tone, “They’re armed.”

I had also noticed the guns strapped under their suit coats.

“And so am I,” I said, nodding to the axe in the back of her car.

Horror and disbelief laced her words.
